The management of the College of Education, Zing, Taraba State, has officially dismissed recent allegations published by a national daily accusing the institution of irregularities in the promotion of academic staff.

In a detailed statement signed by the college’s Director of Information, Boniface Yakubu, the institution described the claims as “baseless, frivolous, unfounded, and untrue.” The statement was made available to our correspondent in Taraba.

While the college initially refrained from responding to the allegations, it decided to clarify the matter publicly to protect its reputation and keep stakeholders informed.

Yakubu explained that staff promotions at the college follow a transparent, merit-based process involving four key stages: the college management, the expanded management committee, the appointment and promotion committee (A&PC), and the governing council.

He detailed that the Expanded Management Committee plays a pivotal role, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Finance, the Academic Board, as well as union leaders from COEASU and NASU. This committee rigorously reviews each promotion case against the Revised Scheme of Service (January 2020).

“In the absence of the Governing Council, promotions are vetted and approved by the Ministry of Education. Otherwise, cases proceed through the A&PC before final endorsement by the Governing Council,” Yakubu added.

The statement addressed specific allegations raised in the publication, including claims of qualified staff being overlooked, junior staff promoted over seniors, promotions granted to staff facing disciplinary actions, and undue influence from the Governing Council chairman, categorically rejecting all such accusations.

The college’s Provost, Professor Ejika Sambo, called on staff to raise concerns directly with management rather than resort to anonymous media reports.

He emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in advancing the college’s developmental goals, aligned with the vision of Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas.
