UI Withdraws 226 Students’ Over Poor CGPA [UPDATED]

The University of Ibadan has asked 226 undergraduate students to withdraw over poor Cumulative Grade Point Average.

University of Ibadan has directed 226 undergraduate students to withdraw due to poor academic performance.

The decision followed a Senate meeting held last Monday to ratify the results of the 2024/2025 academic session for both graduating and non-graduating students. The Senate approved that students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.0 be advised to withdraw.

Following the approval, the affected students will no longer have access to the school portal for registration.

The students cut across various faculties and range from 100 to 500 level.

An official of the university disclosed to The PUNCH that the Faculty of Science recorded the highest number, with 79 students asked to withdraw. This was followed by:

▪ Faculty of Technology – 45 students
▪ Faculty of Agriculture – 35 students
▪ College of Medicine – 18 students
▪ Faculty of Education – 18 students
▪ Renewable Natural Resources – 10 students
▪ Faculty of Arts – 9 students
▪ Economics and Management Sciences – 4 students
▪ Law – 3 students
▪ Environmental Design and Management – 3 students
▪ Veterinary Medicine – 2 students

The withdrawal of poorly performing students is described as an almost yearly exercise, which students have nicknamed “tsunami.” In 2018, a total of 408 students were asked to withdraw.

Meanwhile, newly admitted students resumed physically for the 2025/2026 academic session on Monday.
