ASUU Directs Members To Begin Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members nationwide to begin a strike due to the delay in the payment of their June 2025 salaries. This action is in line with ASUU's "No Pay, No Work" resolution.

ASUU Strike: Key Details

The strike, confirmed by ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna, is a direct enforcement of a National Executive Council (NEC) resolution. This resolution mandates members to withdraw their services if salaries are delayed beyond three days into a new month.

Immediate Impact:

▪️ University of Jos and University of Abuja branches of ASUU have already commenced strike action.

▪️ All institutions whose June 2025 salaries have not been paid are expected to join the strike.

Reasons for the Strike:

▪️ Delayed June 2025 Salaries: This is the primary trigger for the current strike.

▪️ Persistent Salary Delays: Since migrating from IPPIS to GIFMIS, university workers have consistently experienced significant hardship due to delayed salary payments.

▪️ Government's "Lackadaisical Attitude": Prof. Piwuna expressed frustration over the government officials' indifference to lecturers' salaries.

▪️ Deliberate Delay of Funds: ASUU believes the delay in salary payments is a deliberate act by officials at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, as the payment platform itself has no issues.

ASUU's Demands & Stance:

▪️ Enforcement of "No Pay, No Work" Policy: This policy is being strictly enforced across all affected branches.

▪️ Prompt Payment of Salaries: ASUU insists that the government has no genuine reason for the delays.

▪️ Outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA): While the immediate issue is salary delay, ASUU also warned the government to promptly release the remaining N10 billion of the outstanding N50 billion EAA to prevent another round of industrial action.

University of Jos and University of Abuja Confirmation:

▪️ University of Jos ASUU Chairman, Jurbe Molwus, confirmed their withdrawal of services, aligning with the NEC resolution. He noted that strike monitoring teams are activated to ensure compliance.

▪️ University of Abuja ASUU branch also withdrew services. While UniAbuja ASUU Chairman, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, did not comment, the action was reported.
