UTME 2026: Will JAMB Increase Application Fee? Exam Board Speaks

JAMB Maintains Fee Regime, Hints No Hike For 2026 UTME, DE Registrations

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that application fees for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) are unlikely to increase despite prevailing economic challenges in Nigeria.

Key Highlights

▪ JAMB affirms that application fees for UTME 2026 will likely remain unchanged
▪ Parents and guardians are advised to prepare early as there may be no extension of the registration period
▪ The board reiterates its commitment to transparency, accountability, and affordability

JAMB Confirms UTME Fees Remain Unchanged

According to a JAMB bulletin obtained on Monday, January 5, 2026, the board stated that it has not increased the cost of application documents for UTME or Direct Entry exercises and does not intend to do so for the 2026 examination, except where necessary to protect the integrity and quality of the examination process.

The clarification was issued under the leadership of Professor Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede, Registrar of JAMB, to address public concerns about possible fee increases.

JAMB explained that maintaining stable application costs aligns with the directive of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, conveyed through the Honourable Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa. The directive emphasizes that JAMB’s operations must reflect the present administration’s human face policies, with due consideration for the economic realities faced by Nigerian families.

UTME 2026 Registration and Planning

The board stated that the clarification is intended to help parents and guardians plan adequately for their children’s education. JAMB confirmed that the cost implication for the 2026 UTME and DE exercise remains largely the same as that of the previous year.

JAMB further stressed that once registration begins, there will be no extension of the registration period.

Parents and guardians are therefore advised to make early arrangements and ensure timely registration of their wards.

Commitment to Transparency and Efficiency

JAMB noted that despite maintaining affordable fees, the board has continued to operate efficiently and prudently, leading to substantial remittances to the federal government over the years. This, according to the board, underscores its commitment to accountability, transparency, and effective public sector financial management.

The board concluded by reaffirming its dedication to fairness, transparency, and affordability while sustaining global best practices in the conduct of examinations.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to stay informed and prepare adequately for UTME 2026.
