Democracy Day: Federal Government Declares June 12, 2025, Public Holiday

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Sunday in Abuja. The declaration marks a significant moment for Nigerians to reflect on 26 consecutive years of civilian rule, signifying an unbroken period of democratic governance without military interventions.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended congratulations to all citizens, emphasizing that June 12 is more than just a date; it symbolizes the enduring struggle for justice, truth, and the sustained hope for peace in Nigeria. He highlighted that this day represents the nation's historic journey towards a society where truth and justice prevail, peace is maintained, and the future is secured.

Acknowledging the challenges faced along the path, the Minister praised Nigerians for their unwavering strength and resilience. He further stressed the importance of democracy's adaptability, noting that it thrives best when it allows for continuous change and growth, aligning with the vision of President Bola Tinubu's administration.
