WAEC Denies Claims of 2025 Exam Cancellation, Labels Viral Report Fake News

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Federal Government of Nigeria have categorically denied widespread social media claims that the 2025 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) was cancelled or its results invalidated. They confirm that the exams were valid and that results will be released on or before August 4, 2025.

Debunking the Rumors

▪️ Federal Ministry of Education's Stance: Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education, explicitly stated that "The SSSCE conducted by WAEC has not been cancelled. The reports online are completely false and misleading." The ministry is preparing an official statement to further clarify the matter and emphasizes that no such decision was made by the government.

▪️ WAEC's Official Rebuttal: WAEC's Public Affairs Department, represented by Moyosola Adesina, issued an official statement labeling the circulating document as a "fake press release." The false document claimed that WAEC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, cancelled the 2025 WASSCE due to alleged examination malpractices, including question leaks and AI-related cheating. WAEC clarified that this fabricated information is the work of "mischief-makers" aiming to cause panic and discredit the Council.

Confirmation of Exam Validity and Results Release

▪️ WAEC confirmed that script marking has been completed for the 2025 WASSCE.

▪️ Candidates' results will be released on or before August 4, 2025.

▪️ Both the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC urge the public to disregard the fabricated information and rely only on official communications from their verified channels.

▪️ WAEC stressed that all official announcements are made only through its verified communication channels and authorized media outlets. All official WAEC press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.

Details of the Fake Report

▪️ The false report also included a fabricated official, "Dr. (Mrs.) Aisha Lawal," who was falsely identified as the Director-General of the Federal Examinations Regulatory Board—a role that does not exist.

▪️ The fake statement alleged issues like leaked exam papers, AI-generated answers, remote cheating tools, and compromised WAEC staff, all of which WAEC has denied.

Assurance to Candidates

WAEC has assured candidates and the general public that their exam results remain valid and unaffected by these false rumors.
