UNILORIN Students Attacked by Armed Robbers in Off-Campus Hostels, One Injured, Valuables Stolen

On Friday night, armed robbers attacked multiple off-campus hostels occupied by University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) students in the Oke Odo area of Ilorin, Kwara State. One student was injured, and valuables were stolen.

Armed Robbery at UNILORIN Off-Campus Hostels

■ A recent armed robbery incident in Oke Odo, Ilorin, has caused significant panic among students of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) living off-campus.

Incident Details:

■ The attack occurred late Friday night when gunmen, arriving on foot, stormed multiple off-campus hostels.

■ They reportedly attacked several rooms, assaulted one student, and made away with valuables including phones, laptops, and cash.

■ Eyewitnesses recounted that the assailants moved through two hostels, robbing victims at gunpoint before locking them in their rooms.

■ A male visitor was held at gunpoint and robbed.

■ A student who resisted was attacked with a cutlass, sustaining injuries to his head and body.

■ Students reported hearing screams and gunshots, preventing others from coming out to help.

■ The attackers escaped quickly after locking the victims inside. One student managed to break a window, allowing others to escape and seek help.

■ The robbers did not steal large items like TVs or generators, likely due to their mode of transport (on foot), which also aided their swift escape.

■ The injured student was transported to the hospital by a Good Samaritan and was reported to be in stable condition as of Sunday evening.

Growing Concern Over Campus Security

■ This incident has amplified concerns about student safety, particularly for those residing off-campus. There are increasing calls for enhanced security presence in Oke Odo and similar student-dense neighborhoods.

Comparison to Other Institutions:

■ This attack follows a similar robbery last week targeting Kwara State University (KWASU) students in Malete.

■ In response to the KWASU incident, authorities implemented strict measures, including nighttime curfews, a ban on motorcycle operations after 10:00 p.m., and an indefinite prohibition of night parties.

■ UNILORIN students are urging law enforcement agencies and community leaders to adopt similar proactive steps to prevent future attacks.
