NYSC Urges Employers to Fund Corps Members’ Transport, Accommodation

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has called upon employers of corps members to always support the scheme. This includes going to the orientation camp to pick up corps members or refunding their transport fees if they are unable to do so.

The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made this appeal in Bauchi on Thursday, July 24, 2025, during the 2025 NYSC/Corps Employers’ Workshop organized by the scheme in the state.

He emphasized that providing comfortable accommodation for corps members, or payment in lieu of accommodation, would significantly encourage corps members to provide adequate and effective service delivery.

Represented by Agatha Banki, Director, Northeast Area Office 1, Bauchi, the director general explained that the workshop is an annual event. It brings together operators of the NYSC scheme and corps employers for a strategic meeting, facilitating an exchange of ideas to enhance their operations.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES AND EMPLOYER ROLES

▪️ the workshops aim to address grey areas and enhance healthy relationships between organizations, consistently producing ideas and recommendations that are integrated into the scheme's operations.

▪️ the director general expressed conviction that the 2025 workshop would continue this trend.

He further highlighted the essential roles of corps employers, which include:

▪️ provision of accommodation.

▪️ payment of transportation allowance.

▪️ healthcare provision, as available to regular staff.

▪️ provision of a healthy working environment.

Nafiu added that at the conclusion of the workshop, participants are expected to recommend steps to build a proactive and enduring partnership between the NYSC scheme and corps employers.

"you must hammer out more effective formats of communication among our organizations and come up with implementable solutions to the numerous problems that challenge corps administration and proffer solutions," he stated. "i call on you to make individual and collective contributions in shaping the nation-building efforts of the corps members."

STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP

Earlier, Umoren Kufre, the Bauchi state coordinator of NYSC, noted that the NYSC is dedicated to fostering mutual growth and development. He added that strengthening partnerships with corps members’ employers is crucial for the scheme to truly maximize its endeavors.

"strengthening our partnership is not merely a desirable goal but a necessity for fostering empowerment, innovation, and social responsibility," he stated. "throughout this workshop, we will engage in critical discussions, share experiences, and explore best practices that will help us strengthen our bonds and enhance the effectiveness of the NYSC in serving both corps members and the labour market."

The theme of this year’s workshop is "strengthening nysc/corps employers’ partnership for improved mutual benefit."
