We are prepared for “Mother of All Strikes”- ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the Federal Government of a potential "mother of all strikes" if its demands are not met promptly. The union, led by President Prof. Chris Piwuna, expressed frustration over the government's failure to implement key aspects of the 2009 agreement.

ASUU's Key Demands

The union's demands, which they claim have been largely ignored despite their patience over the past year, include:

▪ The immediate signing of the renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

▪ The release of N150 billion in revitalisation funds for public universities.

▪ Payment of the three-and-a-half months' salaries withheld from the 2022 strike.

▪ Settlement of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments.

▪ An end to the erosion of university autonomy.

Government and Stakeholder Response

This threat comes despite the government recently releasing N50 billion to academic and non-academic staff unions for earned allowances. President Bola Tinubu had previously expressed his commitment to preventing future strikes. The Deputy National President of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN), Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, has appealed for dialogue, stating that parents are tired of the repeated strikes that disrupt their children's education.
